Beaufort, South Carolina History

The city of Beaufort, South Carolina boasts a long, rich history. The region was first settled as a French colony after it was founded by Jean Ribaut in 1562. The area in and around Beaufort, South Carolina later became the first Scottish settlement in what is today the United States in 1682, only to be destroyed by Spanish forces in 1684.

Beaufort, South Carolina is the second-oldest city in South Carolina, behind Charleston. The Treaty of Beaufort setting the boundary between South Carolina and Georgia was signed in the city in 1787.

Beaufort is also a center for the Gullah culture and language. St. Helena Island, which is considered one of the last strongholds of the Gullah people who are direct descendents of West African slaves, sits just a few miles from Beaufort, South Carolina.

Today, Beaufort has a substantial Marine Corps presence and is home to Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort and Naval Hospital - Beaufort.
