Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park
South Carolina is a state known for its natural beauty, mild climate in winter, and its many beautiful cities and towns, including Beaufort, the state’s second-oldest city. Beaufot SC lies on the state’s Atlantic coast on Port Royal Island. City residents, tourists, and visitors have an array of attractive sites and recreation opportunities, including at Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park. This exceptional public park serves as a local marina and an all-around must-see stop for anyone who loves water views.
The Park’s Creation
Beaufort, South Carolina, knew what it was doing with this picturesque downtown waterfront area park named after Henry C. Chambers when it officially opened in 1979. Chambers, who was serving as Beaufort’s mayor when the park opened, avidly championed the creation of public parks. These sites replaced many old, abandoned docks scattered along the city’s waterfront.
The City’s Goal
Beaufort’s goal for this and the other waterfront parks it created was to provide scenic and relaxing places for locals and newcomers to enjoy a peaceful slice of nature along the water. Anyone visiting Chambers park or any other city waterfront parks would agree that Beaufort has dramatically succeeded in its beautification efforts. Where the pre-Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park area had once been far less than attractive, there now stands one of Beaufort’s — and the southern South Carolina region’s — top-rated attractions.
The Park’s Features
This beautiful Beaufort public park also serves as an anchor for the downtown waterfront area. An expansive marina — with a store — serves as one of the park’s borders. Other features include a magnificent pavilion completed as part of a 2005 renovation and remodeling effort. The Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park also contains a fine amphitheater, gardens, a playground, and even a farmer’s market. The 2005 renovation and remodeling also included upgrades to the park’s seawall and electrical system and storm water repairs and improvements.
Scenic Water Views
All of Beaufort’s waterfront parks feature scenic water views, especially at the Chambers site. Thousands of visitors daily trek to this city park to enjoy wide-open spaces and abundant beautiful scenery, especially along its water-facing portions. The park’s marina borders the Beaufort River, which is just a short distance from the Atlantic Ocean’s open waters. Park visitors also frequently relax on benches and seats to watch ships, yachts, fishing charter boats, small skiffs, and many other kinds of watercraft head out to the Atlantic and then back again.
The Complete Waterfront Park
Parking at the Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park is free. There are also plenty of benches and seats to go around, in addition to numerous picnic areas and secluded spots. Kids can also burn off energy at the playground, all under the watchful eyes of their parents or other adult minders. If getting away for a bit from Beaufort’s bustling downtown is on your schedule, then this public park is for you. Hours for one of Beaufort, South Carolina’s most beautiful and complete waterfront parks generally run from dawn until dusk. Also, don’t forget to bring suntan lotion or sunblock with you when visiting the park!
